After a crackling round of matches on Day 4 of Aircel Chennai Open 2015, the competition just got more challenging for the world's leading tennis players and hotter and exhilarating for fans in the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals on Friday evening. Six of the top eight sees started the quarter-finals, led by top seed and reigning champion Stan Wawrinka.
In the first encounter of Day 5, 6th seed Yen-Hsun Lu and 3rd seed Roberto Bautista Agut battled it out in a thrilling encounter that witnessed Agut winning 7-6, 6-4 and going through to the semi-final round
Impressive Qualifier Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, who stunned World No.14 Feliciano Lopez yesterday, continued his unbeaten run by trouncing World No.36 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 for a semi-final clash with Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut. Bedene is appearing in his third straight quarter-final here. He was a semi-finalist two years ago.
23-year-old David Goffin, recently honored as ATP Comeback Player of the Year 2014, cut short Andreas Haider-Maurer's smooth run in 1 hr 12 mins to win the match 7-5, 6-2. Goffin is one of the most improved players, jumping from no. 113 in 2013 to no. 22 last year.
Top seed and defending champion, Stan Wawrinka defeated 8th seed big-serving Gilles Muller in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (4) to confirm a semifinal berth playing against 4th seed David Goffin. This was a first meeting for the duo that lasted only 1 hour 25 mins.
In the first semi-final clash of the doubles draw, continuing their dominance, Leander Paes and South African partner Raven Klaasen took down their Spanish opponents Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in a match that lasted just under an hour to finish it in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 much to the delight of Chennai fans. This will be the 7th time for Paes in the Aircel Chennai Open doubles finals. He is currently 6-0 in Chennai doubles finals, winning five times with long-time partner Mahesh Bhupathi. His last title here came three years ago with Janko Tipsarevic.
