Belgian wild card Goffin advances to first Tour quarters of his career
CHENNAI, India, Jan 5, 2012 - Belgian wild card David Goffin advanced to the first ATP Tour quarterfinal of his fledging career at the 2012 Aircel Chennai Open on Thursday with a spectacular come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Andres Beck of Germany.
The 21-year-old Goffin, ranked 174 in the world, rallied from a set down to shut out the German, ranked 76 places higher, for his third victory on the Tour in six matches.
"I am happy and feeling confident of playing in the quarterfinals," said the Belgian, who felled seventh seed compatriot and world No. 49 Xavier Mallise in a three-setter in the first round.
"In the first game he was too good," said Goffin, who will play the winner of the second round match between Serbian top seed and world No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic and Indian wild card Yuki Bhambri in the quarterfinal.
"I was aggressive in the second, and when I broke him in the third I knew I could finish on my serve," he added.
Goffin, who advanced to the second round from the qualifiers in the previous edition, displayed quick footwork as he won the second set and took control of the third set with breaks in the sixth and eighth games.
