Tipsarevic stops wild card Goffin's inspired run
CHENNAI, Jan. 6, 2012 _ Serbian top seed Janko Tipsarevic drew from his vast experience to stop the inspired run by Belgian wild card David Goffin 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals of the Aircel Chennai Open 2012 at the SDAT-Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium on Friday.
World number 9 Tipsarevic will meet Japanese qualifier Go Soeda in the semifinals. The 120-ranked Japanese pulled off a spectacular victory over Swiss third seed and defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka.
The 21-year-old Goffin, ranked 174 in the world, stunned seventh-seeded compatriot and world No. 49 Xavier Malisse in the first round and German world No. 98 Andreas Beck in the next.
But Tipsarevic was a formidable opponent, and broke Goffin in the first and sixth games to win the opening set.
The young Belgian, however, came back strongly in the second, breaking his opponent in the sixth game to win the second set.
Tipsarevic won the third set after breaking Goffin in the sixth and eighth games to move into his third straight semifinals at the Aircel Chennai Open.
Spanish second seed and world No. 10 Nicolas Almagro will meet big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic in the other semifinal.
