Gold Flake Open 2000

The Gold Flake Open 2000, held from January 3rd – 9th, attracted a field of international players stronger than ever before, with four players in the top 25 of the ATP tour rankings. This reflected the growing importance of the event amongst the players. The field included world number two Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia, world no. 13 Cedric Pioline of France, defending champion Byron Black of Zimbabwe and India’s own Leander Paes.

Once the event began, the top seeds except Pioline toppled early. World no. 38 Frenchman Jerome Golmard emerged triumphant in his first tournament after a seven month injury break, beating surprise finalist Markus Hantschk of Germany 6-3, 6-7(6-8), 6-3 to claim the winners cheque of US$ 54,000.

Julien Boutter of France and Christophe Rochus of Belgium beat India’s new heroes Prahlad Srinath and Saurav Panja 7-5, 6-1 to win the doubles title in straight sets.
