Aircel Chennai Open Announces Players Draw

Chennai, January 2, 2010: The draw ceremony for the singles matches at the Aircel Chennai Open 2010 has produced several interesting 1st round contests. The eighth ranked player in the world and No. 1 seeded player in this tournament - Robin Soderling from Sweden is competing against Robby Ginepri from USA while No. 2 seeded player - Marin Cilic is up against Russian player Igor Kunitsyn.

The two Indian wild cards entrants Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Devvarman will be facing tough and seasonsed opponents in the opening round. Somdev Devvarman is going up against German Rainer Schuettler while Rohan Bopanna is up against Swiss player and 2008 Olympic Gold medal winner in men's doubles, Stanislas Wawrinka. Rainer Scheuttler, a former finalist at the Australian Open, is a regular visitor to Chennai and he will look to exact revenge against Somdev from last year's event, when Shchuettler had to withdraw due to injury.

The other prominent wild card entry is the former Chennai Open winner and former world number one - Carlos Moya, who is playing fourth seeded Serbian player Tipsarevic Janko.

Speaking at the ceremony, Somdev Devvarman said "Rainer Schuettler is a tough first round opponent and I am sure the crowd will get to see great tennis." Rohan Bopanna sought the blessings from the local Chennai crowd for his match against the 21st ranked player in the ATP, Stanislas Wawrinka. Rohan, who has been training hard over the past fortnight for this event, is geared up to face Wawrinka, who is coming from cold weather conditions in Switzerland. It will be interesting to see how Wawrinka adjusts to the hot and humid weather conditions that prevail in Chennai.

Mr. Ravi Krishnan, Managing Director - IMG South Asia and Senior Vice President, IMG said "Aircel Chennai Open 2010, held during the 1st week on the ATP calendar, has over the years produced several interesting contests early in the tournament and this year is no exception. Since players are returning from their off-season, some of them adapt a lot quicker to the conditions due to their off-season training than the rest and this has resulted in some thrilling upsets in the past."

Mr. Karti P Chidambaram, Chairman - Organising Committee and Vice President of AITA & TNTA said "As expected the Aircel Chennai Open 2010 has a competitive field with several exciting matches in the 1st round. Interesting matchups include Carlos Moya and 3rd seeded Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia, and the contest between Somdev and Schuettler will ensure that the crowd will get to witness excellent tennis in the early part of the week."

The qualifying draw for this year's Aircel Chennai Open 2010 is the most competitive with the last direct entry being ranked #633. This is qualifying cut-off entry is the "lowest" in the history of the tournament and several qualifying contests over the weekend will be as competitive as main draw matches.
